The site of the town of Hillsborough has been inhabited for more than 1,000 years - first by native Americans and later by European settlers. It's no mystery why so many people have chosen to make Hillsborough their home over the years. The picturesque setting, temperate weather, and close proximity to the beautiful Eno River all conspire to make this area a truly great place to live. Hillsborough is centrally located, too. This charming little town of just over 10,000 people is a mere 20-minute drive north of Chapel Hill, home of the University of North Carolina's flagship campus. Durham, a city of more than 230,000, is just about the same distance away. Local attractions include the Ayr Mount Historic Site, a Federal-era plantation fully renovated to its former glory; the Occaneechi Indian Village, a replica of a 17th century native American settlement; and Chatwood Gardens, a nationally renowned English-inspired country garden. Hillsborough citizens love the town's quaint, intimate setting, rich cultural history, friendly atmosphere, outdoor recreation opportunities, and its commitment to responsible growth.
